U.S. District Court Judge Loren AliKhan formally stated that she felt compelled to issue yet another formal restraining order against President Donald Trump and his administration’s “catastrophic” federal funding freeze, as the administration has already made it perfectly clear that they will not be complying with the previous order from a different that said the freeze must be halted.
Last week, a temporary restraining order was formally issued by Rhode Island U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell that served to block President Trump and his administration from their plan to enact an immediate freeze on federal grants and loans. The order was sought by multiple Democratic-led states across the nation.
“Are there some aspects of the pause that might be legal and appropriate constitutionally for the Executive to take? The court imagines there are, but it is equally sure that there are many instances in the Executive Orders’ wide-ranging, all-encompassing, and ambiguous ‘pause’ of critical funding that are not,” Judge McConnell wrote in the restraining order that blocked the funding freeze.
New reports came out yesterday confirming that Judge AliKhan has signaled her willingness to sign an additional temporary restraining order into effect that is being sought by U.S. nonprofit agencies.
AliKhan called the Trump Administration’s federal funding freeze “catastrophic.”
Judge AliKhan says the request for a TRO is not moot. She says she’s inclined to grant it. Says the funding freeze could be “catastrophic” to organizations who receive federal funds. She’ll try to get an order out before her administrative stay expires at 5 p.m.
