Things got a bit awkward during Donald Trump’s recent interview with Fox News when he seemed to openly snub his own vice president as a potential presidential predecessor for 2028 — leaving the Fox host a bit shocked.
Trump’s remarks came during his pre-Super Bowl interview with Fox News anchor Brett Baier, who asked the president if he sees Vance as a potential successor to the MAGA movement in 2028, when Donald is Constitutionally barred from running for or taking office again.
“No, but he’s very capable,” Trump answered.
“You know I think you have a lot of very capable people,” Donald went on to add. “So far he’s doing a fantastic job – it’s too early we just started.”
The awkward revelation came as Baier was previewing part two of his big pre-Super Bowl interview with the president, which finally aired in its entirety last night.
Baier reminded Trump that his vice president would almost undoubtedly be “looking for an endorsement” by the time midterm elections roll around, but Trump used that opportunity to shift into bragging on himself.
“A lot of people have said that this has been the greatest opening in the history of the presidency,” Donald told the Fox anchor. “We’ve done so much so fast. And we really had to because they have really, what they’ve done to our country is so sad, so sad.”
When previewing the interview on his Fox segment yesterday, Baier admitted that he was actually taken back by Trump’s response to the topic and thought it was “a little shocking when he said ‘no.'”
“I wasn’t expecting that,” Baier told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum as the pair previewed the big interview. “Once you get to the midterms, you start to think about 2028 and obviously one would think that J.D. Vance is going to be trying to position for that role but clearly the president is not ready to talk about that or think about it. He says that there are other people that may get in the mix.”
He went on to add that Trump “definitely does not want to talk about it right now.”
Baier also touched on the elephant in the room when he said that, while Trump has toyed with the unconstitutional idea of a 3rd term multiple times, in multiple rallies, speeches, and social media posts, “in reality, in private, he’s told people that this is his last hurrah.”
“He clearly doesn’t just want to give the hat tip to J.D. Vance, at least not yet,” the Fox host said.
Trump doesn’t have a good history when it comes to his vice presidents, especially when you consider that Vance is only in this position because Mike Pence refused to play along with Donald’s attempts to overthrow the US presidential election which resulted in Trump’s supporters calling for the then-VP to be hanged — something Donald refused to condemn.
