The United States Supreme Court handed sitting President Donald Trump a brutal loss when they rejected his bid to keep billions of dollars in congressionally-approved foreign aid frozen, as per her executive orders.
However, that fight is far from over. In fact, it’s truly just beginning.
The Supreme Court did not issue a deadline for the federal foreign aid to be released, leaving the White House with a clear path to continuing to appeal and dispute the matter through the lower courts, where U.S. District judge Amir Ali delivering a ruling last month, order that such a large amount of money should continue flowing while the matter is carried through the court process and he reviews the case.
CNN’s Katelyn Polantz reports, “When you step back and look at what’s happening in this order right here, it’s 5-4, and the four dissenters of what is being done right now for Donald Trump, those people are all the the conservative justices and what they are saying is, we can’t believe that this Supreme Court is going to override what the executive wants to do here and just give this lower-court trial judge Ali in Washington, D.C., on the district court the power to figure this out right now, so a big struggle between the court system and Trump.”
Multiple non-profits that rely on federal funding filed lawsuits against the Trump Administration after President Trump froze billions in aid from the State Department and the US Agency for International Development. These lawsuits are challenging the federal funding freeze as a direct violation of the US Constitution.
Judge Ali originally set a deadline to unfreeze the funds for Wednesday. However, the Trump Administration immediately rushed an emergency appeal of the ruling, which resulted in Chief Justice John Roberts unilaterally issuing a stay that served to pause the case.
