DOJ SCRAMBLING As Trump’s And Officials’ Social Media Posts Could Jeopardize Luigi Mangione Case

Federal prosecutors on the case against Luigi Mangione are scrambling to do damage control in the wake of claims that public social media posts and statements made by US President Donald Trump, as well as several of his administration officials, could ultimately jeopardize the prosecution of the young man turned overnight martyr who stands accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to recent reporting from NBC News.

One attorney for Mangione told the news outlet that they would “be filing a letter with the court in short order,” with regard to the recent, widespread allegations that public statements and social media posts made by high-ranking US government officials could threaten their client’s chance at a free and fair trial, as afforded to him by the United States Constitution.

Just last month, sitting US President Donald J. Trump made public remarks on the Mangione case during an appearance on Fox News, where he stated that Mangione had “shot [Thompson] right in the middle of the back.” Luigi’s legal team rightfully pushed back against Trump’s public statement, arguing that it inferred their client’s guilt, despite the fact that Mangione has not yet been found guilty in a court of law.

Trump’s public comments on the case ignited a Conservative firestorm, quickly being picked up by the White House-affiliated X account “Rapid Response 47,” which shared a clip of Trump’s Fox News comments on Mangione to its 1.2 million-plus followers on X.

That post was just the beginning of a domino effect throughout the Right-wing world, as it went on to be picked up by the likes of Chad Gilmartin, the Trump Department of Justice’s public affairs office deputy director, who added that the president was “absolutely right” in regard to the accused United Healthcare CEO killer.

As Mangione’s legal team pushes for their client’s Constitutional rights as an American citizen, federal prosecutors are now desperately attempting to downplay the severity of the president’s and his officials’ public statements regarding the infamous case, recently going so far as to petition the court to disregard them entirely.

In a filing recently submitted to the court by federal prosecutors, they argue, “They operate entirely outside the scope of the prosecution team, possess no operational role in the investigative or prosecutorial functions of the Mangione matter, and are not ‘associated’ with this litigation.”

They go on to state that they “promptly directed” the Trump officials to remove their online posts and statements regarding the Mangione case, as soon as they became aware of them.

Luigi Mangione has pleaded “not guilty” to the range of charges lodged against him, including murder in the first and second degree, as well as criminal possession of a weapon. Mangione was originally also charged with terrorism, though that charge was ultimately dismissed by a judge on the basis that it was “legally insufficient.”
