According to deeply disturbing new reporting from CNN, the United States Central Intelligence Agency has now been forced to conduct a thorough assessment of its own security measures, after a Trump White House email concerning more civil service layoffs appeared to compromise the names of multiple undercover officers within the agency.
This scramble to do damage control as quickly as they can is, according to CNN, “just one of multiple aftershocks from President Donald Trump’s push to take a jackhammer to the federal government — including the CIA. The administration’s efforts to cut the workforce and audit spending at the CIA and elsewhere threaten to jeopardize some of the government’s most sensitive work, current and former U.S. officials familiar with internal deliberations say.”
The CIA was one of countless government agencies forced to begin discussing layoffs and terminations as a result of Elon Musk’s highly controversial involvement in the US government.
Almost immediately upon Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Musk and his unelected Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force began to scorch through every agency of the executive branch, passing out unceremonious layoffs and terminations, branded as a “renewed energy” into US intelligence operations.
However, an email sent from the White House over an unclassified server ignited instant chaos, as the email contained a list of suggested layoffs for numerous CIA employees who were still within their probationary period as new hires — some of which may have been undercover officers and their first and last names were now plastered all over an unsecured email.
CNN goes on to note that matters were made that much worse because “some U.S. embassy positions that are actually filled by CIA officers under cover may now be at risk of being revealed — potentially angering the host nation and exposing companies or endangering CIA assets who are known to have met with past occupants of the role.”
One former CIA operative spoke with CNN on the matter and proposed the following hypothetical scenario:
Your predecessor was in that position, as were the five officers before them. Now the host country and adversaries know this person going to this position in the embassy is agency. They now assume the predecessors were the same [and] work backwards and find out their collective footprint. The position is now burned.”
CNN further reports that, unfortunately, this is far from the only national security threat that these mass firings pose.
Their report explains that “mass firings and the buyouts already offered to staff risk creating a group of disgruntled former employees who might be motivated to take what they know to a foreign intelligence service.”
